San Diego A slick boutique hotel called Tower23 bills itself as a sophisticated seaside resort for upscale travelers. Named for a not-so-nearby lifeguard tower on Pacific Beach, the 44-room hotel perches on the bike path along a stretch of beach usually populated by surfers and cash-strapped families.

School ditches traditional sports for karate, yoga and dance
A school is downgrading traditional team sports in favour of kick-boxing, karate, yoga and frisbee. The historic Suffolk school, founded in 1550, is filling the timetable with a range of minority sports instead of concentrating on the staple mix of rugby, football, hockey and netball.
